Mrs. Barbiere's Classroom Page!
Instructor: Mrs. Barbiere

"Behind every child who believes in himself/herself is a teacher who believed first."

"If a child can't learn the way we teach... teach the way he or she learns."

"To teach is to touch a life forever."

Welcome to Mrs. Barbiere's Classroom Page!
I am looking forward to another exciting school year as a Smith School resource room, in-class support, specialized multi-sensory reading, and Orton-Gillingham teacher! My goal is to instill a love of learning in my students by developing each child's unique potential. Every child has the ability to learn, and deserves to feel confident, comfortable and successful.

Please browse through my classroom page to find classroom expectations, helpful resources and important announcements. Homework assignments will also be posted on this page. Students will have the opportunity to submit some homework assignments online. I will specify the homework assignments that may be submitted electronically. Also, the school supplies needed are the supplies already requested by your child's homeroom teacher. Your child will bring those supplies into the resource room with them for class.

Background Information
I am a nationally accredited and certified Orton-Gillingham Teacher, and Dyslexia Therapist, having completed the Orton Gillingham/ Dyslexia Specialist Scholarship Program at the Mason's Tenafly Learning Center through Fairleigh Dickinson University.  I currently specialize in reading, but I have taught other content areas, so I am also well-versed in all subject areas and curriculum. During after school hours, I provide individualized Orton-Gillingham instruction to students with dyslexia at the Mason's Tenafly Learning Center. I am also an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapist, and provide home and community instruction to learners with autism.  I love working with all students and I believe that teaching is one of the most rewarding professions!  After all, our children are the world’s greatest natural resource!

My educational background includes graduating from Rutgers University with honors in 2006 with my bachelors of arts degree.  In 2014, I graduated from William Paterson University as the graduate class’s valedictorian with my Masters of Arts in Teaching Elementary K-6 and Special Education. My thesis was also published as a book chapter in an educational technology book titled Tablets in K-12 Education: Integrated Experiences and Implications. In addition, I have completed the post-masters Orton-Gillingham Teacher
/ Dyslexia Specialist Scholarship Program through Fairleigh Dickinson University.  I am also planning on continuing my education, since I am a lifelong learner! wink

One of my goals is to give my students the wings to "fly", and instill within them a passion for learning, and READING, so that they may grow to love it just as much as I do! With that being said, I am looking forward to collaborating with everyone in the Smith School and Tenafly community. Let's make this school year a fun, positive, meaningful, challenging and successful one! smiley

Multi-sensory Instruction

Multi-sensory instruction is held in 30 minute sessions 2x a week for students in grades 1-5, and 5x a week for students in kindergarten. I am an Orton-Gillingham Teacher and Dislexia Therapist, and provide Orton Gillingham tutoring at the Mason's Tenafly Learning Center during after school hours. Orton-based multi-sensory strategies are employed during these sessions in order to teach, reinforce and sharpen reading and spelling skills. Students will first be screened to determine their understanding and knowledge of phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, letter-sound relationships, syllable types, syllabication/syllable patterns, structural analysis and comprehension skills and strategies in reading and spelling. This screening will help guide multi-sensory instruction, so that each student's needs may be addressed.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns the best way to reach me is through e-mail at jbarbiere@tenafly.k12.nj.us. I will respond as soon as possible and within 24 hours.
